The Moose Jaw Warriors picked up their first win of the preseason Saturday night against the Swift Current Broncos. Jagger Firkus and Atley Calvert each had a hat trick and combined for 11 points in the 7-4 win for the Warriors. The game was played in front of 1,300 fans at a sold-out Southland Co-op Centre in Assiniboia. Jackson Unger turned away 29 of 33 shots to backstop the Warriors to the win. Moose Jaw's next preseason action is Friday night in Brandon. The two teams will then travel back to Moose Jaw for the Warriors' official preseason home opener at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
The Moose Jaw AAA Winmar Warriors will open their preseason Wednesday at home against the Swift Current Legionnaires. The Warriors game in Regina scheduled to take place on Saturday was cancelled.
Moose Jaw's high school football teams kicked off their regular season over the weekend. Peacock dropped a 47-8 decision to Yorkton, while Central picked up a 52-7 win over Swift Current.
The Vanier Vikings made their debut in the 9-man league over the weekend defeating Gull Lake 40-13 in exhibition play at Elks Field.
There was plenty of action in the Kinsmen Moose Jaw Minor Football League, with four Moose Jaw teams improving their records to 2-0. In the U14 division, the Moose Jaw Raiders outscored the Estevan Oilers 38-20. The Moose Jaw Vikings shut out the Swift Current Steelers 34-0. In the U12 division, the Moose Jaw Spartans blanked the Weyburn Ravens 41-0. The Moose Jaw Lions downed the Assiniboia Rockets 66-24.
In case you missed it, the Saskatchewan Roughriders fell 51-6 to Winnipeg on Saturday. The Riders are back in action on Friday when they host Edmonton at Mosaic Stadium.
In the Majors, the Toronto Blue Jays completed the three-game sweep over Kansas City, beating the Royals 5-2 yesterday at Rogers Centre. Toronto currently occupies the second wild card spot in the American League. The Jays begin a four-game homestand against Texas tonight.
