Monday marked the beginning of a new era in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan.

A couple of firsts will be accomplished, with this being the first spring session since 2007 that Brad Wall hasn't lead the Saskatchewan Party into the Legislature and the first time new premier Scott Moe does.

Moe said he's excited about starting a new chapter in the province's politics.

"I'm very much looking forward to this spring session, my first session," he said. "I think there will be a real focus on the budget that we're bringing forward. We're in year two of our plan to balance the budget on the behalf of the people of the province of Saskatchewan. I think it's important to note that we do have a three-year plan and we do remain on track to achieve that."

With Moe not taking over the reigns until late January the Sask Party pushed the budget reveal date back by a few weeks until early April.

Joining Moe as a new face of politics in the province is Ryan Meili who is now the leader of the official opposition after winning the NDP leadership last weekend.

"I think the other that we will see is that there are two new leaders and you will see a clear choice start to develop and emerge from the two party leaders," Moe said.

There will also be three new MLAs making their first appearances in the legislature, from Kindersley, Melfort and Swift Current.

A new speaker was also elected during the Assembly on Monday; Mark Docherty, the Saskatchewan Party MLA for Regina Coronation Park beat out six others, including Moose Jaw North MLA Warren Michelson, for the position of speaker.

A vote for a new speaker was needed after Corey Toshor resigned last year, stepping down to run for the federal conservatives after winning the nomination in Saskatoon-University.
