It's been said that crime prevention starts in the classroom by helping our youngsters get off to a better start. Education and awareness are some of the best crime fighting tools at our disposal and Primary Crime Prevention Program is making its way around the Friendly City.

Coordinator Greg Veillard goes classroom to classroom with a specific target of teens ages 9-13. The retired educator is drawing from his time teaching law.

"Generally, shoplifting and vandalism are considered gateway crimes. Many young people are surprised to find out that there is a Criminal Code offence called mischief that covers things like egging a house of a vehicle." said Veillard. "It's educational and I think we've got them thinking about things and that's the important thing."

Veillard also offers an introduction to law, police, the court system, criminal records and does a presentation on shop-lifting, property crime, peer-pressure and decision making.
