A group of Moose Jaw teachers are vying for the chance to be on the hit television show, Family Feud Canada.

St. Agnes School teachers Renee Mealing, Kyle Lichtenwald, Melinda Daintree, Saleh Afshar, Hailey Sills, and alternate Tara Gottslig have put their hats in the ring to take part in Family Feud Canada’s first-ever Teacher’s Week.

Mealing is the team captain and says it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to make an appearance on Family Feud.

“I think a lot of us grew up watching the show,” says Mealing. “It’s pretty cool to see it could be a possibility for us and represent our little school and our city. We’re pretty excited for that opportunity and we’re really hopeful that we get a phone call or an email anytime soon, letting us know we’re on the show.”

She adds that the competitiveness and the teamwork mentality between the six of them would be a major asset to the show, which is set to start filming sometime in August.

Mealing says the idea to apply for the show came in May when she saw an ad for Teacher’s Week on social media.

She then sent out an email at work asking if anyone was interested in potentially being on Family Feud.

“I had quite a few responses but when you can only choose five, I just went with the first five that responded and obviously were the most enthusiastic,” adds Mealing.

It was not an easy feat to apply for the popular tv show, as the group had to go through jump through several hoops.

The first part of the application process was to submit an audition video, which was a way to introduce themselves to the selection committee.

“In order to stand out we wanted to highlight our city first off. We toured around and went to the Tunnels [of Moose Jaw] and did some pictures and videos there, went downtown to River Street, we went out to Mac the Moose, and then the Trolley was there and got some pictures with the Trolley.”

Melinda Daintree’s husband is a CF-115 Hawk pilot at 15 Wing Moose Jaw and he along with a couple of others performed a flyover for the teachers to add to their audition video.

Following highlighting Moose Jaw, the teachers then moved to begin showcasing St. Agnes School.

“We have over 25 countries that are represented in our school, we have lots of students from around the world, so we highlighted that. We have a cool tree of all the flags of the world that are represented at our school.”

Then the teachers could have some fun with the video and ended it with a friendly game of dodgeball against some of their students.

After submitting the video, the group made it to phase two of the application process, which was a virtual audition with the producer of the show.

“He basically started off with me introducing everyone and then he had everyone say a little more about themselves. The questions were geared to us personally and our teachers, and any funny stories that we had teaching.”

After the Q&A period of the audition, the team got to play “Fast Money”, which is usually at the end of the show, where both teams have 20 seconds to answer as many questions as possible correctly to get as many points as they can.

“He wanted to see how well we worked as a team, and he wanted to see us cheering and high-fiving.”

Moving forward the team can continue to send the producer funny stories about themselves, but the main thing is to keep promoting themselves on social media.

It is a waiting game for the group now, as they have not heard anything from Family Feud Canada on if they have been selected or not.

If they are selected, filming for Teacher’s Week is expected to start Aug. 10 in Toronto.

Teacher’s Week of Family Feud will be aired on CBC this fall.
