This weekend will mark 134 years of service for Moose Jaw’s Salvation Army (MJSA).

The MJSA is currently the largest and oldest running Salvation Army in Saskatchewan.

The MJSA does a variety of initiatives and fundraisers to help residents within Moose Jaw and the surrounding communities.

“We’re proud of all of our events. We have been providing meals to low-income seniors that would otherwise maybe go without. We’re excited about our events and partnerships within the community. Providing a Christmas, whether it’s through hamper, whether it’s through toys from our toy shop for families that would otherwise go without a Christmas dinner. We have clients that we work with downtown in providing a brown bag breakfast every morning... to help meet the needs of people in the community,” says Lieutenant Lester Ward, Pastor of the Salvation Army Church and Director for Community and Family Services.

He added that the long list of programs doesn’t end with the ones he’s listed.

He also says that the staff and volunteers of the MJSA are proud and excited to continue to help the community.

To celebrate the anniversary the MJSA is hosting multiple community events this weekend.

This Saturday there will be a women’s fellowship luncheon at noon which requires a $5 attendance fee. Then in the evening, a community barbeque will begin at 6 pm. On the following Sunday morning, Major Mike Hoeft, Area Commander for The Salvation Army in Saskatchewan, will be speaking at the worship service on “A Firm Foundation” at 11 am. Attendance for both the barbeque and the church service is free of charge.

All events will be hosted at The Salvation Army Moose Jaw Community Church at 2 Wintergreen Drive.

“We’re excited about it. We’re glad to be a part of it. My wife and I have only been here almost two years but (we’ll be) looking back over the years and celebrating the things that have happened. We’re so blessed to be a part of this upcoming weekend," says Ward.

If you’re planning to attend any of these events, you’re asked to call the MJSA head office at 306 692 5899 to register your attendance before noon on Friday. This is so the MJSA can properly prepare for the events.
