The Peacock Tornadoes had troubles with the Yorkton Raiders Saturday, eventually losing 37-0 in Moose Jaw High School Football league action.

The Tornadoes were facing a Raiders team that is capable of exploiting any mistakes that Peacock made, a fact which Peacock head coach Bert Redstone recognized.

“They don’t stop,” he said. “If they’re going full speed and we’re going half speed, they’re going to win every time. You need 12 guys on the field going full speed to match that. At points in the first half, we did half that. At points in the first half, our defence could hang with them.”

Redstone said they realized they'd have their work cut out against the Raiders, who are once again undefeated on the season.

“We’ve got their film and we see what they do,” he said. “They come hard and we’re trying to get our guys prepared for that. I tihnk that with the youth we have, a little bit... I’m not making excuses for the guys (though). Bottom line is we’ve got to play. It’s the fourth game in and everyone’s got to step up and play some football.”

Redstone said his team has to show how they want to play going forward.

“At some point it’s got to be a gut check by the players,” Redstone said. “Coaches can talk all day, but bottom line is we can’t play. We aren’t on the field doing the stuff. Xs and Os for us is fine and trying to get guys in spots, but the expectation is that they go out and execute this. If we don’t get that, then what can we do? We’re just grasping at straws.”

Five different Yorkton Raiders found the end zone, as Connor Watrych completed 11 of 21 passing for 128 yards.

Peacock was led on the ground by running back Kayde Shymko with 47 yards on 13 carries, and quarterback Kyle Yamniuk completed only two passes in the game.

Yorkton, meanwhile, got 70 yards on eight carries from Val Declines and 79 yards on three rushes by Josh Haczkewicz. Three different Yorkton receivers caught three passes each.

In the other games in high school football Saturday, Estevan beat Vanier 35-0 and Swift Current defeated Weyburn 33-0.

It was the Estevan Elecs first ever shutout in the Moose Jaw High School Football League. Jonah Bachorcik rushed the ball 13 times 129 yards, while Chase Martel caught two passes for 53 yards to lead the Elecs.

Vanier’s Xander Montgomery ran eight times with the ball for 64 yards, while Natan Shiferaw caught three passes for 20 yards.

This week will also see a pair of games at Gutheridge Field. Weyburn plays Central at 1 p.m. and Peacock is at Vanier at 3:15 p.m.

Yorkton is at Estevan Friday, while Swift Current has a bye week.
