Alexander True was the hero for the Seattle Thunderbirds, scoring with 7:24 remaining in the first overtime period to lift them past the Regina Pats, 4-3, in Game 6 of the WHL Championship Series.

This is the first Ed Chynoweth Cup for the Thunderbirds, who lost in the championship series last year.

The Thunderbirds feature six Saskatchewan-born players, including former Moose Jaw Generals forward Donovan Neuls, who posted two goals and five points in the six-game series against Regina. He had eight goals and 23 points during Seattle’s playoff run.

Seattle headed into Game 6 with a 3-2 series lead after winning back-to-back games at home by a combined score of 13-5, but Sam Steel opened the scoring for Regina 7:18 into the game on Sunday.

Sami Moilanen tied things up for Seattle in the second period to send the game into the third period even at 1-1.

The Pats jumped in front 3-1 midway through the third after Josh Mahura and Austin Wagner scored just 1:22 apart.

Seattle answered back just over a minute later when Ryan Gropp banged in his seventh of the playoffs and then with 2:54 to go in regulation, Keegan Kolesar tied the game up to send things to overtime for the third time in the series.

Both teams had chances in overtime, but True broke into the offensive zone and buried his own rebound past a sprawling Tyler Brown to give the Thunderbirds the win.

Seattle out-shot Regina, 8-4, in overtime and 43-31 in the game.

The Thunderbirds will now head to the 2017 Memorial Cup in Windsor, ON, which will feature two American teams for just the second time ever with the Erie Otters winning the OHL Championship.

The Memorial Cup starts on Friday.
