Quite often on social media, you will see posts from concerned residents because a stranger wandered into their yard.

While he couldn’t say for sure if there is been a rise in this type of trespassing, Moose Jaw Police Service’s Chief Rick Bourassa said it has been an ongoing issue in the city for years.

While the odd situation involves police interventions, Bourassa says the majority of the incidents are usually minor in nature.

“When we get there very often the people are gone and we don't know who it was. Occasionally, when we do encounter people, it was a harmless interaction that sometimes was just a mistake,” he said.

In the meantime, there are steps you can take to help prevent trespassers and protect your property.

“Fencing and things like that can be important if there is a concern and there are all those other pieces, yard lighting at night time, some people will have cameras, and there are lots of little things that people can do if they are concerned about that. We would certainly encourage anyone to contact us for more information from our members about that,” Bourassa added.

He also emphasized that you don’t leave your keys in your vehicle as that is how most vehicle thefts happen. Also, make sure you lock your doors.

If you see any suspicious activity, you are asked to call the Moose Jaw Police Service.
