Before hitting the ice for their 2022-2023 AAA Hockey League season, the U18 Warriors will need to finalize their roster, which they will do on Monday and Tuesday, as they will host their fall camp.

Head coach, Trevor Weisgerber, who is entering his fourth season with the club, says it’s going to be a competitive camp, there are only three spots up for grabs.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how guys trained over the summer and how they’re looking, so we can fill those spots and see the guys that we have coming back as well,” says Weisgerber.

Twenty-five invitees will be vying for the two forward and one defenseman positions that are available within the club.

Heading into camp the Warriors will have more of a veteran group as Weisgerber notes that seven to ten players are returning for this season, along with a number of players committing in the spring, which has made it a tough challenge for those looking to make the team.

Last season the Warriors finished their SMAAAHL season with a 26-17-0-1 record, which landed them in fifth place heading into the playoffs. Unfourtanley, they were swept by the Regina Pat Canadians in the first round of the playoffs.

“This year starting out strong is big. We didn’t have a very good start last year; I believe we were 8-8 early on in the season. You need to start out well! Through the season you can build off a good start. That’s something we will be preaching to our guys.”

Weisgerber adds they will be relying on their plethora of returning players to give the team the fast start early on they need to be successful later on in the season.

Last season, Rowan Calvert led the team in scoring with 55 points (28G-27A). Second, was Daxin Peterson with 42 points, and third, was returning forward, Liam Fitzpatrick with 39 points.

Following their fall camp, and the team finalized, the players will be getting a quick break, and then will return for their first pre-season game on Sept. 11, against the Swift Current Legionnaires at Mosaic Place.

The U18 AAA Warriors will begin their season on Sept. 23, as they host the Battleford Stars for a two-game series at Mosiac Place.
