This week, four Regina swimming enthusiasts are undertaking a mammoth task. Swimming the entire 93 km length of Last Mountain Lake for charity.

Meghan Chisholm and three of her friends will take turns, swimming for an hour at a time all in support of the Regina YWCA's Say YES campaign.

"All of us four ladies are really into swimming," says Chisholm, "and with the COVID pandemic and swimming pools and lots of events being shut down, we wanted to do something together that we all love - which is swimming - and also do some fundraising for a good cause."

The Say YES campaign seeks to provide support to women and families who are suffering from domestic violence or homelessness. Chisolm says that these issues have become even more evident due to the pandemic.

"Because of COVID there's been quite a few job loses and more people stuck at home, potentially with abusive partners."

This is the first recorded attempt to swim the entire length of Last Mountain Lake is expected to take 30-40 hours. To make it double jeopardy, the group is conducting the swim according to Marathon Swimming Federation rules.

"We have to wear a certain type of bathing suit, only one cap, wear goggles, and no flotation devices. There'll be a boat escorting us with some observers onboard to make sure we follow all the rules."

Chisholm and her friends have been training for this swim since May and explains some of the challenges involved with such an ambitious undertaking.

"We're most concerned about any thunderstorms because if there's any lightning then it's not safe to go swimming and would just put a huge pause on the swim."

The plan is to begin the swim at 5:00 in the morning during the window of the 15th to the 19th.

Chisholm says they have already reached over half of their $5000 donation goal. You can donate yourself here.
