Moose Jaw’s Angela Sereda won $5,000 for Heartland Hospice as the WHL finalist for the 2021 CHL Kubota Community Hero contest.

The contest recognizes people across Canada that are making a difference in their communities. Finalists were picked from Western Canada representing the WHL, Ontario representing the OHL and Quebec and the Maritimes representing the QMJHL.

“This is just a passion of mine to really enhance the end-of-life experience for people and so really, it's overwhelming and very humbling as well,” Sereda said.

Christian Vachon of Magog, Que. was named the grand prize winner and took him $20,000 for a charity of his choice and a trip for two to the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

Sereda was named a runner-up along with Mehari Hagos from Windsor, Ont. They both received $5,000 each for their charities.

Sereda is the chair of Heartland Hospice, which works towards improving end-of-life care in Moose Jaw and having dedicated hospice beds in the community.

“Our board is absolutely amazing. There are 11 of us on this board and we worked really hard over the last few years to really come up with some campaign to really enhance end-of-life care and hospice care in Moose Jaw,” she said.
