The Moose Jaw Warriors have announced the commitment of list forward Riley Niven.

Niven played for the U18 AAA Warriors this season, scoring two goals and six assists in six games and forming on-ice chemistry with Atley Calvert. Last season with Winnipeg's Rink Hockey Academy, he had 23 goals and 31 assists in 36 games.

“Riley brings skill and character, his best attribute is skating with lots of speed,” commented Assistant General Manager Jason Ripplinger in a media release from the Warriors. “He plays a 200-foot game and is a player who will take pucks into the dirty areas.”

Niven, originally from Wawota, will be with the Warriors in the Regina hub when the season starts March 12.

The Warriors have dealt forward Peyton McKenzie to the Kamloops Blazers for a sixth-round bantam draft pick this year.

McKenzie had one assist in 21 games with the Warriors last season before joining the Drumheller Dragons. He had four goals and five assists in 12 games for the Alberta Junior Hockey League. He was held pointless in four playoff games there before the pandemic cut short the season.

Earlier this season, McKenzie had two assists in two games with the Dragons.

“We are excited to add Peyton to our organization,” said Kamloops general manager Matt Bardsley in a media release from the Blazers. “He brings real good energy along with a skill set and hockey sense that we look for in a Blazer. He also can play at a pace that we want to play at and believe he will be a good fit to our group.”
