Two of the best teams in the Western Hockey League will be on the ice at Mosaic Place on Tuesday night. The WHL-best Moose Jaw Warriors will host the B.C. Division-leading Victoria Royals, who are just two points behind Moose Jaw for top spot in the league.

The Warriors are coming off a rough outing on Saturday, which led to the team’s second home loss for the season as they fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Prince Albert Raiders. 20-year-old forward Tanner Jeannot said the Warriors have learned from that loss and will bring a more complete effort when they take on the Royals.

“We just want to get back to the basic, give it 100-percent every time you’re out there and that’s what it comes down to in this league, every team is a good team and we’ve got to work if you’re going to get those wins, so that’s our focus going into this week,” said Jeannot, who sits second of the team with 17 goals this season.

Following Saturday’s loss, Warriors head coach Tim Hunter lamented the way the team had played over the past five games against teams much lower than them in the standings.

Jeannot said they got away from their game over that stretch, “Today in practice, everybody wanted to get right back to it and were going 100-percent, so that’s our focus going into (Tuesday) night and that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.

The Warriors won’t be able to take the Royals lightly as they enter with the highest scoring offence in the league, registering 118 goals through 27 games this season.

Victoria is led by speedy forward Matthew Phillips, who is fourth in the league with 46 points (20 goals and 26 assists) in 27 games.  Phillips paces a fast attack from the Royals that can strike quickly.

“They’ve got a lot of skilled guys, so we’ve got to make sure that we’re playing a good defensive game,” said Jeannot.  “Us as forwards, we need to track back to home plate hard every time and as D, they need to have good gaps and make sure we get the puck out on the first try.”

The Warriors’ defence may get a boost for Tuesday’s game against the high powered Royals as 18-year-old defenceman Josh Brook is close to returning to the ice.

The Montreal Canadiens’ second round pick was out of the yellow non-contact jersey at practice on Monday and said he’s feeling good.

“I’m progressing really well, it’s a huge step forward starting to take contact in practice… I’ve come a long ways,” said Brook, who has missed all 25 games this season for the Warriors after having wrist surgery to repair an injury suffered at Canadiens’ rookie camp.

“I just want to do whatever I can to help the team, play good defence and get the puck up to our skilled forwards.”

The Warriors and Royals hit the ice at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. The Pre-Game Show is on the air at 6:40 p.m. on Country 100.
