Residents are being advised that the city will begin its unidirectional water main flushing program starting today.

Flushing takes place in Zones 1 and 3 this year, with all flushing taking place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. An interactive map with the flushing schedule can be found here

The program removes any recent mineral deposits in the water lines to improve water quality as well as the carrying capacity of the pipes.

Residents are being asked to refrain from using water while crews are flushing in their area as the water may have a brown or rusty appearance. The discoloured water shouldn’t last more than a day once the flushing is completed.

Once flushing is completed, residents should turn on their cold water taps one at a time and run them for about 30 to 60 seconds to clear any water that is cloudy or contains sediment. If your water is still coming out cloudy or still has sediment, repeat the process until the water is clear.
