The Western Hockey League announced an adjustment to the start date of the 2020-2021 regular season.

The league said they intend to start the season Dec. 4, but they still intend to have a full 68-game schedule.

The WHL said in a media release Thursday that the plan is contingent on receiving necessary approvals from government and health authorities to go ahead.

"In our discussions with the government and health authorities, it has become apparent that additional time is required to ensure we can return to play in a safe and responsible manner. Our WHL health and safety protocols have been well received by the health authorities but we have several key issues that we will need to reach a resolution on in the coming months," said WHL commissioner Ron Robison in the release.
