A motion by Councillor Crystal Froese was passed on Monday night at city council to add two new members to the Youth Advisory Committee.

The new members would be one representative from an accredited distance learning school and one representative of a homeschooled student. Both students must be residents of Moose Jaw.

Froese said the motion came about when the committee was approached by a 16-year-old girl who is attending an online accredited high school and she wanted to take part in the committee.

Currently, the students on the committee represent physical schools in the community.

"Times are kind of changing within our community. There are more students being homeschooled and I'm sure there are more students taking distance learning," Froese said.

"I would never want to discourage any youth from participating, particularly on this committee because I think it is one of the most worthwhile committees we have."

Coun. Heather Eby said she was in favour of the motion, but asked about the application process as the current students are nominated by their teachers.

Froese said nomination processes are already in place for other committees where administration can vet them. City Solicitor Myron Gulka-Tiechko added that by default a competition who go back to city council for final approval.

Mayor Fraser Tolmie was in favour, but also wondered who it would work.

"The only thing is with the other students they represent a body of students and so the difficulty and the challenge would be that the homeschool student is representing just themselves. But if I work myself through that I understand that that is the way forward," he said.

The motion passed unanimously. According to Gulka-Tiechko, the Youth Advisory Committee isn't established through bylaws, but resolutions, so the call out for applicants could be put out in the next few weeks.
