RCMP urge caution around buses, farm equipment as seasons change
With the return to school and the harvest season in full swing, the Saskatchewan RCMP are reminding drivers to be extra cautious on rural roads. Key warnings include paying close attention around school buses, adjusting speed for changing fall road conditions, and being aware of fatigue among those working long hours in the agriculture sector. Superintendent Grant St. Germaine with the Saskatchewan RCMP said the most important thing for drivers to remember about school buses is to pay attention. He noted that buses will be making frequent stops and that children, excited to be going to or from school, are not always focused on traffic. “We need to be doing that for them as drivers,” St. Germaine said, emphasizing the need for motorists to take extra caution because you don't know what might happen in front of you. Speed is another major concern as the weather changes. St. Germaine pointed to a recent fatality caused by fog and suggested that drivers are likely going too fast for the conditions. He warned that as overnight temperatures begin to dip to zero or below, drivers must be aware of slippery road surfaces. “We have black ice or changing road conditions that we have to be cognizant of that are happening at this time of the year and be careful for it,” he added. Finally, with harvest underway, St. Germaine highlighted the risk of driver fatigue. He noted that farmers and their staff are working long hours and urged anyone feeling tired behind the wheel to take precautions. “If you're tired, pull over and take a break if you have to,” he advised. “If you have to take a break, take a break so that we don't have an accident.”
