Central's Dax Whitehead drives the lane against Vanier this season in High School Senior Boys Basketball.

Eight teams will be hitting the court at Peacock Collegiate and Central Collegiate over the next two days for the 53rd annual Moose Jaw Senior Boys Basketball Invitational.

The annual tournament sees some of the top teams from around the province make their way to the Friendly City to square off with the Peacock Toilers and Central Cyclones.

North Battleford, Weyburn, Meadow Lake, Swift Current, Prince Albert St. Mary and Saskatoon Marion Graham will all be taking part in the tournament, along with the two local teams.

Central head coach Leigh Pethick said they’re going into the Invitational just trying to take things one game at a time.

“Our focus is just to win our first game against North Battleford,” said Pethick.  “We’re just hoping to win our game on Friday, get on the A side and then just compete the rest of the way against some tough teams.”

The Cyclones will open the tournament against the North Battleford Vikings on their home court at 3:30pm.  The Toilers are hosting the Meadow Lake Spartans at 5:30pm in their opening game.

The winners advance onto the A side, while the loser fall into the B bracket.  The Championship final will be held on Saturday at 5:00pm at Peacock.

Thursday Results… The Peacock Toilers were on the court on Thursday night in the High School Senior Boys Basketball League.  They knocked off the Vanier Vikings 97-64 thanks to 19 points from Braedon Crone.

In girls action, the Caronport Cougars were back up to speed against the Assiniboia Rockets, picking up a 61-41 win on Thursday night.  Lauren Janzen, who missed Tuesday’s loss to Central due to travel problems from a vacation, led the way for the Cougars in the win with 12 points.
