Former Moose Jaw curler Skylar Ackerman had a great weekend before coming home for the Scotties week.

Ackerman, a Peacock grad who now attends the University of Saskatchewan, won U18 mixed doubles provincials last weekend in Nipawin with partner Daymond Bernath.

“It’s a good game, it’s a lot different from the team play, but I play with one of my good friends…

We had a really great weekend together and we came out on top and it was a lot of fun.”

They went 8-and-1 on the week, including the championship final they won 6-4 over Regina’s Shayla Moore and Joshua Bryden.

Also in the field at provincials with a Moose Jaw connection was Ana Cornea and Daniel Moerike, and also a team with Jazmin Ackerman and Bryden Tessier.

“Most of the teams there, no one’s top priority is really mixed doubles,” she said. “But there’s a lot of really good players at that U18 level right now and there was a lot of really close games that could have went either way. But we just kept going, pushed through, did the best we could and we were successful.”

There's no nationals for U18 mixed doubles but the win does give them a berth in the provincial mixed doubles championship next weekend in Humboldt.
