For the second year in a row, Skylar Ackerman is the recipient of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation Scholarship.

The former Moose Jaw curler will get $5,000, part of which will go to her school and the other part for curling, and she'll be involved with a fundraiser for the foundation in the winter.

Ackerman was thrilled and honoured to receive the scholarship, which goes partly to her curling expenses, and partly to her schooling.

“I’m so thankful to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation for giving me this opportunity for a second time,” Ackerman said. “It was such a great experience last year, just being mentored by (former Scotties winner and Canadian curling hall of famer) Cathy Overton, and all of the wonderful things they do. Just in the community, it’s so great to be a part of all of that and help them with their efforts.”

Ackerman organized a fundraising event at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre last year, which helped raise money for the foundation and she plans on running at again this year.

Ackerman described what they were involved with last year.

“Last year, we actually all got together in the summer, and toured a hospital in Manitoba, and toured the neonatal unit, and we learned about what our money in all our fundraising goes towards,” she said. “It was just a great experience to see all of our efforts and the foundation’s efforts in action.”

Ackerman will be back at the University of Saskatchewan in the fall.
