This weekend marks the return of one of the new high school traditions, with Soccerfest taking part all over the city.

The high school girls soccer tournament goes all day today and tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m., at Sunningdale and VLA fields.

Tournament organizer Scott Wicker said the fields are looking OK.

“As of right now the fields actually have held up pretty good considering all the rain we’ve had all the last four days,” said Wicker. “Luckily the drainage for the rain is been pretty good. So the fields are actually in pretty good shape besides being wet.”

The return of Soccerfest after last year when they couldn't get officials is a triumph for the soccer community.

“It’s really great to have the games on for all the student athletes,” he said. “There’s not a lot of opportunities sometimes for them play soccer, and having these tournaments can certainly give them that chance. We’ve been working with Sask Soccer and the Sask High Schools Athletic Association to this year too to improve our tournament in terms of bringing in some extra officials and some mentors for our officials as well to make up for last year and that cancellation.”

There are 14 teams from all over the province coming to the tournament, including Vanier, Central and Peacock girls. Normally they had 16 teams, but a couple teams dropped out.
