The Skylar Ackerman rink that made it to the Canada Winter games in last year will have its banner forever in the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.

The banner unveiling took place last night at the 2018-19 Champions dinner at the curling club.

A gracious Ackerman said the club always feels like home.

“I credit pretty much everything, all my success here,” she said. “They’ve got the cameras here now, and everything they’ve done is to help develop youth curlers. This facility is second to none in this province, it’s probably one of the nicest centres around. To have my youth coaching and curling and learning to curl here is kind of amazing.”

Ackerman’s rink included third Madison Johnson, second Chantel Hoag and lead Samantha McLaren, as well as coach Patrick Ackerman. Once at the Winter Games, Ackerman’s rink went 6-4 in the round robin before bowing out in the first round of the playoffs to eventual bronze medal-winning Nova Scotia.

Ackerman is from Chamberlain but has been curling at the centre here in Moose Jaw since it opened.

“I’ve had the most amazing teammates for the past three years and I wouldn’t have changed anything about them,” Ackerman said. “Just to be able to hang this banner here in Moose Jaw means a lot. I’ve literally spent more time in this rink than I have my own house the last ten years, so it means a lot. Everyone is like family here. To be able to be a part of that forever is really special.”

She's now attending the University of Saskatchewan and will attempt to win provincial junior championship, as well as compete in some women's tour events.
