The Moose Jaw Bantam A Mavericks picked up a dominating win on Sunday afternoon at the Bert Hunt Arena.

The Mavericks rolled to a 9-2 win over the Swift Current Colts in their opening game of the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League season.

Keara Merriman had a hat trick to lead the way for the Mavericks, while Makayla Anderson had two goals and three points.

Sidney Ellingson, Kaitlyn Gilroy and Nikita Halyk had a goal and two points each in the win.  Tia Miller, Ember DuSomme and Ellie Gauvin picked up two assists each, and Courtney Botterill had the other marker for Moose Jaw.

The Mavericks scored three goals in three minutes — a pair from Merriman and one from Anderson — midway through the first period and then they extended to 6-1 after two thanks to goals from Halyk, Gilroy and Anderson.

Merriman completed the hat trick just 39 seconds into the third period, while Ellingson scored on the power play and Botterill made it 9-1 with 1:40 to go in the game.

Moose Jaw’s Sydnee Christmann made 13 saves to pick up the win in goal, while the Mavericks threw 54 shots on the Colts’ net.

The Mavericks will return to the ice on Saturday when they head on the road to face the Parkland Crushers.  Moose Jaw will host the Estevan Bear Cats on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. at the Bert Hunt Arena.

Peewee; Estevan 5 Mavericks 3

The Moose Jaw Peewee Mavericks are still looking for their first win of the season after falling 5-3 to the Estevan Bear Cats on Saturday in the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League.

Moose Jaw and Estevan traded goals late in the opening period with Ashley Breitkreuz tying the game for the Mavericks with 2:09 remaining in the firste.

Jordyn Kerntopf and Gracie LeBlanc scored early in the second to make it 3-1 for the Bear Cats, but Jasmine Kohl pulled Moose Jaw back within one with 6:08 to go in the middle frame.

Jacey Farr put Estevan back up 4-2 in the final minute of the second period and Morgan Kjersem gave the Bear Cats a three-goal cushion just 2:06 into the third period.

Kohl picked up her second of the game on the power play late in the third, but it wasn’t enough as the Mavericks fell to 0-1-1 on the year.

The Mavericks will have home games on Friday and Saturday this week as they host the Weyburn Gold Wings and Swift Current Ice Cats.

Midget AA; Weyburn 7 Warriors 2

The Moose Jaw Midget AA Warriors opened their season on a losing note on Saturday with a 7-2 loss to the Weyburn Wings at Mosaic Place.

Josh Fitzpatrick and Garrick Ward scored for Moose Jaw in the loss, while Cooper Cole picked up a pair of assists.

Weyburn jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first and extended that advantage to 5-2 after two before adding a pair of goals in the third period to seal the win.

Jacob Winowich took the loss in goal for the Warriors.

Moose Jaw will be back on the ice on Sunday when they host the Prairie Storm at the Barkman Arena in Caronport at 4 p.m.
