After back-to-back double overtime games to open the series, the Moose Jaw Bantam Mavericks made sure extra time wasn't needed in Game 3 on Sunday.

The Mavericks capitalized on their chances and locked down defensively for a 3-0 win over the Parkland Fire in the third and deciding game of the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League's South Division Final at the Red Knight Arena.

Moose Jaw will now face the Northwest Sharks in the SFHL championship series.

"It's crazy, we had a really good season, a lot of tough competition, but we happened to pull through," said Mavericks captain Sidney Ellingson after Sunday's win.

Ember Dusomme opened the scoring with a power-play goal midway through the second period and Eowyn Stokes gave Moose Jaw some insurance with a shorthanded marker midway through the third.

The Mavericks' penalty kill was key in the win, going 5-for-5, and the unit came up huge in the third period with the shorthanded goal and two kills.

Jasmine Kohl fired the puck into an empty net with three seconds left in regulation to seal the win for the Mavericks.

"We did well on getting the puck out [of our end], backchecking and getting to the front of the net to get the rebounds," said goalie Brooke Archer.

The loss in Game 2 was the only time that the Mavericks have tasted defeat this season. Ellingson said that loss served as motivation for them coming back home for Game 3.

"We wanted to push a lot harder," said Ellingson. "We played pretty good, we executed well, battled on the boards and we just carried through."

The Sharks also finished undefeated in the regular season and they captured the North Division title in two games over the Prince Albert Foxes.

Archer said that they're confident heading into that series, "We just need to play our game, play Maverick Hockey and just go there to show them what we can do," she said.

No start date for the championship series has been announced as of yet.
