Improving each time out on the floor is the goal for the Moose Jaw Bantam Mustangs and that’s just what they've done so far early in the season.

After going 1-3 and finishing fourth at a tournament in Swift Current last weekend, the Mustangs opened their season in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League on Wednesday night with a 4-4 tie against the Estevan Voltz at the Kinsmen Arena.

"At the tournament we weren't as strong, but now we're moving, we're catching those passes and our chemistry is starting to go, so it's going to be a good year," said Mustangs forward Ethan Johnson.

Brennan Blatz led the Mustangs with two goals and three points in the tie, while Braxton Mac Angus also found the back of the net for the Mustangs.

Estevan opened the scoring in the first half of the first period on a goal from Kaden Chrest, but Moose Jaw struck for three goals in the final 6:25 of the frame to take a 3-1 advantage after one.

The Voltz battled their way back to tie the game on a pair of second period goals from Jackson Miller. The Mustangs scored late again in the period as Blatz scored his second of the game to send Moose Jaw into the third with a 4-3 lead.

Estevan's Nathan Wagstaff scored just under six minutes into the third to tie the game and that's how the score would stay.

"We played some strong defence, they also played really strong defence and their tendy was shutting us out all night, our tendy did good, lots of shot opportunities for both teams, we're pretty even teams," said Johnson.

The Mustangs were able to control a lot of the play throughout the game, but couldn't find as many holes in Estevan's goalie to pick up the win.

Moose Jaw did dominate in the loose ball stat as they secured 60 to Estevan’s 33.

“We did lots of moving, lots of passing and we were winning those loose ball battles that we needed, but we just couldn't pull through,” said Johnson.

The Mustangs will be back on the court on Saturday afternoon. All four Moose Jaw teams will be taking to the court throughout the day at the Kinsmen Arena against Standing Buffalo.

The Peewee Mustangs hit the court at 9:30 a.m; the Novice Mustangs go at 10:45 p.m; the Midget Mustangs are in action at 1 p.m; and the Bantam Mustangs finish the day at 2:30 p.m.
