It wasn't a clean start to the game for the Moose Jaw Bantam Mustangs on Monday night as they trailed the Weyburn Thrashers 1-0 until late in the second period. Two late goals by the Mustangs in the second sparked them heading into the third where they scored six times to roll to an 8-2 victory at Mosaic Place.

"We started off slow, everyone didn't really want to play," said Mustangs forward Josh Johnson. "The last time we played [Weyburn], we beat them [big] so we might have thought that since we beat them, they might just give us the win, they never did, they worked for it but once we got a couple of goals at the end of the second period and third is when we really started going."

Johnson scored one of those goals late in the second period to spark the Mustangs, he finished with a hat trick in the win, while Rowan Calvert and Dalton Cushway added a goal and two points each.

Trent Benning opened the scoring for Weyburn with 1:36 to go in the first period and that goal held up until Calvert scored for the Mustangs with 2:41 to play in the second. Johnson followed that up just 1:06 later to give the Mustangs the lead heading into the third and they were rolling after that.

Johnson scored his second of the game 8:08 into the third period to make it 3-1 for the Mustangs. Cushway added to the lead just 43 seconds later.

Johnson would pick up his hat trick goal with 9:40 to play to make it 5-1 for Moose Jaw.

Lukas Salikin extended the Mustangs lead some more, scoring with 7:04 to play and only 1:52 later, Ashton Glova scored to make it a 7-1 advantage. Eric Woodley added a goal with just one second left in the game to finish off the win for the Mustangs.

The win improves the Mustangs to 2-0 to start the season in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League.

"I hope we can keep this start going but we've just got to have good practices and keep the effort going," said Johnson.

The Mustangs return to the court next Wednesday when they face the Thrashers for a rematch in Weyburn.

A number of the bantam players will be back in action coming up on Thursday when they play their first game with the South Sask Elite in the Saskatchewan 'A' Lacrosse League. The Elite will host the Regina Barracudas, 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
