The Moose Jaw Bantam Mustangs were golden over the weekend at the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League championship tournament in Estevan.

The Mustangs beat the Swift Current Rampage MW in two one-goal games on Sunday to complete a perfect season in the SSLL.

"The guys had a great regular season, winning all their games, but we knew every game was going to get tougher and as the weekend went that's exactly what happened," said Mustangs head coach Steve Michaluk. "We faced stiff competition from a Swift Current team that we've been battling close all year."

The Mustangs opened the weekend with a 9-4 win over the Swift Current Rampage TT to advance into Sunday's final where they met up with the Rampage MW.

Moose Jaw won 3-2 in overtime in the morning game. Josh Johnson scored the game-tying goal late in the third period and Rowan Calvert picked up his second of the game in the extra frame to secure the win.

With the double knockout format, the Mustangs needed another win over the Rampage in the afternoon and pulled out a narrow 2-1 victory to capture the league title.

Eric Woodley scored the game-winning goal with 4:24 to play in the third. Liam Fitzpatrick had the other goal in the win for Moose Jaw.

"Two evenly matched teams, it could have gone either way and we're glad that it worked out in our favour," said Michaluk, who added that three of their four meetings with the Rampage this season have been decided by one goal.

"We talked before the start of the final game about our work ethic, our ability to think the game and our ability to execute and I couldn't be more proud of the guys with how things went down."

The Mustangs will now turn their focus to the Canada Day Tournament in Calgary this weekend where they will face some new challenges ahead of the provincial championship tournament in Saskatoon in two weeks.

"We're going to have some fun there," said Michaluk. "We're excited because we get to play all brand new teams, so it's really exciting to see that. There are eight floors of lacrosse going in one facility, it's a really good atmosphere and it will be a fun weekend for Mustangs lacrosse."

Moose Jaw will be sending teams in the Midget B, Bantam B, Peewee B and Novice A divisions.

Midget Mustangs Fall Short in Final

The Midget Mustangs brought home a silver medal from the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League playoffs in Estevan this weekend.

Moose Jaw kicked things off with a dominating 12-4 win over the Regina Snipers on Saturday morning, but with a number of players missing for prior commitments, the Mustangs dropped a 9-4 game to the Regina Attack on Saturday night.

The Mustangs rebounded with a 6-5 win over the Snipers on Sunday morning and then with a full lineup, topped the Attack, 8-6, in the final.

Caelan Fitzpatrick and Ethan Peters scored twice each for the Mustangs in the win and Peters finished with four points, while Atley Calvert added a goal and four points as well.

Moose Jaw's win forced the final into a 10-minute mini-game, which the Attack won 2-0 to take the league title.
