The Moose Jaw and Saskatchewan junior box lacrosse scene today wouldn't be what it is without the contributions of the father and son team of Barry and Ken Stewart.

The pair will be inducted into the inaugural Prairie Gold Lacrosse League hall of fame this weekend and Barry remembers the string teams he coached after the league formed in 2002.

“The next year, 2003, we entered and for the next, I think six or seven years we won titles,” said Stewart. “I think our record for my time with the team from 2003 to ‘06 was … 62 wins, towo ties and two losses.”

The father and son team of Barry and Ken so integral to the growth of the sport in Moose Jaw and Saskatchewan.

“So, Randy Troback, who I think should take most of the credit for getting the league going, because we certainly talked about it, Randy and I, we felt it was going to be a positive and that that our province was at a place as far as talent and numbers was to support a league like that, so our kids, our older kids, had a place to play.”

Indoor lacrosse locally and provincially got a shot in the arm from people like the Stewarts in the early 2000s, leading to what you see today with several teams in several age divisions in Moose Jaw and throughout southern Saskatchewan.

Barry credits fellow inaugural inductee Randy Troback with helping kickstart the PGLL. Troback and his son will also be inducted this year.

Barry remembers the early days of the fledgling junior lacrosse organization.

Barry said his late son Ken was a real team player and he would have been humbled by the induction.

“Obviously (he would have been) excited and happy about it, but he always deferred to the team first, not himself,” Barry said.

Ken Stewart still holds the league record with 285 career points. He was the first player in league history to record 100 goals, and scored 150 goals with 135 assists with the Mustangs. From 2002-2005 he was a league and playoff all star selection. Ken was the team MVP of the 2005 national box lacrosse championships, finishing 11th in tournament scoring.
