The Moose Jaw Miller Express went toe-to-toe with the Western Major Baseball League leaders on Tuesday night at Ross Wells Park.

Corey Harrell hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to help the first place Weyburn Beavers to a 6-3 win over the Millers, who fall to 11-9 with the loss.

"We played well I thought, we pitched well, we played defence well, hitting was pretty good and they came out on top tonight unfortunately," said Millers outfielder Eric Marriott.

"We're right there with them and when it comes late in the season, we’ll see who the better team is."

Moose Jaw opened with a run in each of the first two innings.

After leading off with a double to start the first inning, Marriott came around to score on an RBI-double from outfielder Alex Hendra-Brown.

Shortstop Ty Lightly led off the second inning with a bunt single and advanced all the way to third on an error from the Beavers. He'd come into score on a groundout by Marriott.

Weyburn answered back over the next two innings, scoring one in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Millers finally broke through to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded up the bases with no outs, but Moose Jaw could only come away with one run on a sac-fly from Scott Platt.

The lead didn't last long as the Beavers struck for the grand slam just moments later and they would hold the rest of the way.

Millers starter Mitch Robinson allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four with no walks over six innings in the no-decision.

Nick Falco held the Beavers off the board in the seventh with two strikeouts, while Matt Perry was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Blake Gallagher struck out two in a scoreless top of the ninth.

Marriott led the offence for Moose Jaw with a 2-for-4 night out of the lead-off spot. He scored one run and drove in another.

"I'm loving it up here, it's fun, it's different, it's a different vibe for sure, but I love it up here and I'm helping the team as much as I can," said Marriott.

Moose Jaw had nine hits off the Beavers' pitchers in the loss.

Weyburn starter Conner DiNaro allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out eight in the no-decision.

Reliever Dalton Ross was credited with the win after throwing two shutout innings with one hit and one walk against and one strikeout.

Eric Evans struck out three in the ninth inning for the save.

The Millers will return to the field coming up on Thursday night when they host the Regina Red Sox at Ross Wells. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
