One of the biggest turnouts ever made for a very successful afternoon in Wakamow Valley.

There were 269 runners from around the province in the city for the 15th annual Moose Jaw Invitational Cross Country Meet on Wednesday afternoon. The turnout was just six shy of setting a new all-time mark for runners.

Two local runners put together stellar performances to walk away with gold medals at the local meet.

Vanier senior Allison Grajczyk-Jelinski breezed through her three laps of the one-kilometre loop on her way to winning the high school girls race and gold in the senior girls' division.

"I trained a lot over the summer, as opposed to last summer, so I'm feeling pretty strong this year and I’m excited for the season," said Grajczyk-Jelinski after barely breaking a sweat to win the race.

A pair of Peacock runners came in second and third in the senior girls' division with Alyssa Roney taking silver and Camryn Gillies picking up bronze.

Central's Kal McGillis took top spot in the senior boys division as he flew through his four laps. Vanier's Samuel Morse came in second in the senior boys' division, while Swift Current’s Rueben Kuzma was third.

McGillis said he's happy with how the first race of the season went for him, "I was just trying to go hard the whole race, not give out so soon, and just stay strong," he said

Both McGillis and Grajczyk-Jelinski have their sights set on medals at provincials this year, but they also know that they'll have their work cut out for them.

"It would be super cool to come away from provincials with a medal," said Grajczyk-Jelinski. "Finish on a good one."

In the midget girls division, Swift Current's Hillary Lacelle claimed top spot, while Central's Ellie Gauvin was second and Peacock's Brooklyn Roney finished in third.

Mossbank's Megan Kleckner won the junior girls division, while Miheret Cridland from Peacock was second and Vanier's Elizabeth O’Reilly came in third.

Liam Vargo from Peacock flew through the final stretch to finish in first place in the midget boys division, while Central's Zarek Sand was second and Rafael Pondevida from Swift Current finished third.

The junior boys' division was won by Glentworth's Dylan Harden. Rouleau's Tanner Bean finished second and Peacock's Wyatt Cozart came in third.
