The growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Saskatchewan will be on display on Saturday at Yara Centre here in Moose Jaw.

Control Jiu-Jitsu, the local club, is hosting the 2018 Saskatchewan BJJ Championships with close to 150 athletes taking part in the day-long event.

"Our students are very excited to get out on the mat and show everybody what Jiu-Jitsu is all about," said Control BJJ coach Donald Booth.

"We’re very excited to be hosting the provincial championship, we’ve been preparing for the last year-and-a-half with our students, we’ve done several competitions up until now and everybody is very excited to compete on their home turf."

There will be athletes young and old competing at the provincial championship. "We have 30-35 of our members competing," said Booth.

"It should be a pretty busy day, everybody signs up and then brings their parents, grandparents, neighbours, so we’re expecting about 500 people."

The doors open at 9 a.m. and the competition starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Yara Centre. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids, while five-and-under gets in free.
