There's a good opportunity for local athletes to develop their volleyball and basketball skills over the summer in Caronport.

Briercrest Athletics is getting ready to host its annual camps at the college just west of Moose Jaw. They offer a co-ed volleyball camp, as well as boys and girls basketball camps.

"We're in full mode planning for the summer," said Shane Sowden, head coach of the Briercrest Clippers men’s basketball team. "For three weeks, our gyms are full with a few hundred kids, we're the only overnight camp in the province and we’re getting excited for another full summer."

The basketball camps are open to kids ages 11-18 and the boys camp will run from Aug. 4-9, while the girls will be on the court from Aug. 11-16.

The volleyball camp is for ages 12-18 and will be running from July 28-Aug. 2.

"They’re going to get a well-organized camp where your kids are cared for all week long," said Sowden. "You come in Sunday night, we get court time Sunday night, have an evening program and then basically Monday through Friday, you're training all day and in the evening, we set up a tournament.

"It's a lot of basketball [and volleyball], your kids are going to be tired at the end of the week, but they're going to have a lot of fun. It's five full days of basketball, fun and personal growth and it's a great time at the end of the summer."

Sowden added that if you're interested in taking part in the camp, you shouldn't wait as their camps have been growing in popularity.

"Every year, volleyball and the boys' basketball camps have filled up, girls basketball has been growing consistently," said Sowden. "The camps fill up really quick, volleyball tends to fill up even before summer and I was turning people away for boys basketball all the way up until August."

Registration for the camps is now open. Click here for more details.
