Hockey was secondary in Humboldt on Wednesday night as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season opened up with the Broncos taking on the Nipawin Hawks.

It was the first regular-season game since April's bus crash involving the Broncos, which cost 16 players, coaches and staff their lives and injured 13 more. The lives that were affected were honoured before, during and after the game, which includes the Broncos retiring the numbers of all the players on the bus that day.

In the game, Moose Jaw's Jeremy Bisson scored the game-winner and finished with two points as the Hawks skated to a 2-1 win over the Broncos.

Michael Clark had the lone goal for the Broncos, set up by Brayden Camrud, who along with Derek Patter were the only two players from last year’s team in the lineup for the game.

Moose Jaw product Chase Lacombe made his SJHL debut for Humboldt while Jaxsen Wiebe did the same for the Hawks. Both players were held off the score-sheet.

These two teams will meet again on Friday in Nipawin.
