Team Canada was given a good test in their pre-tournament opener on Wednesday night as they held on for a 5-3 win over Switzerland in Victoria, B.C.

Maxime Comtois of the QMJHL's Drummondville Voltigeurs had two goals and four points to lead Canada to the win.

Canada held a 4-1 lead in the second period, but two late goals in the frame allowed the Swiss to make it a one-goal game heading into the third period. Comtois iced the game with an empty-net goal with 28 seconds left to play.

Moose Jaw Warriors captain Josh Brook made a nice play to help set-up Canada's opening goal by Portland Winterhawks forward Cody Glass, who tied the game only 14 seconds after Switzerland's Philipp Kurashev opened the scoring.

Glass finished with a goal and three points in the win.

Mississauga Ice Dogs forward Owen Tippett and Comtois scored to close out the first period with Canada leading 3-1.

Oshawa Generals forward Jack Studnicka scored a power-play goal midway through the second period, but the Swiss didn't go away with goals from Valentin Nussbaumer and Tobias Geisser to cut the lead down to 4-3 heading into the third.

Canada cleaned their game up in the third period and held off Switzerland for the win.

Ottawa 67s goalie Michael DiPietro made 14 saves on 17 shots in the win, while Canada fired 40 shots on Swiss goalie Luca Jan Hollenstein.

The Canadians will return to the ice on Friday to face-off with Slovakia at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria. Canada finishes its pre-tournament schedule on Sunday against Finland at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

The 2019 World Junior Hockey Championship opens with Canada taking on Denmark on Boxing Day in Vancouver.
