Team Canada fell short against host Sweden in the semifinals on Saturday at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 World Championship.

The back-and-forth game saw Sweden score twice in the third period to skate past Canada 4-3 and secure their spot in the gold medal game. Canada won't be playing for gold for the first time at the U18 Worlds since 2013.

Brayden Tracey and Daemon Hunt of the Moose Jaw Warriors were held off the score sheet in the loss for Canada. Kamloops Blazers forward Connor Zary scored twice, while Victoria Grizzlies forward Alex Newhook had the other marker for Canada.

Sweden opened the scoring on a goal from Philip Broberg 11:47 into the first period, but Zary answered for Canada with 3:46 left in the frame.

Newhook put Canada in front just 1:27 into the second period and they held that advantage until Alexander Holtz evened the score for Sweden with 6:05 to play in the second.

Holtz would strike again for Sweden 9:23 into the third period. Canada answered back with Zary’s second of the game just 3:26 later.

Both teams had chances down the stretch until Albin Grewe broke up the tie game for Sweden with just 2:31 to play.

Canada will now face the United States for the bronze medal after Russia beat the Americans 3-2 in Saturday's other semifinal game. The bronze medal game goes at 7:30 a.m. and the gold medal game hits the ice at 11:30 a.m.
