Team Canada was tested early, but goalie Scott Wedgewood shut the door and led the Canadians to a 5-0 shutout win over the Czech Republic at the World Junior Hockey Championships Wednesday.

Canada went up 1-0 early in the first period as Brandon's Mark Stone continued to light the tournament on fire with his fourth goal in two games.

The Czechs put up more of a fight in the second and stayed within a goal until late in the frame when Wedgewood sent an ice-long pass to spring Freddie Hamilton on breakaway. He was stopped, but got the puck to Ryan Strome for a 2-0 Canada lead.

"We were on the change there and (Wedgewood) saw Freddie up there on the far blue line. He hit with the perfect pass and the breakaway didn't work out, but Freddie threw it back in front and I scored. I gave him a little point because it was his play," said Strome, who plays for the Niagara Ice Dogs.

That goal got Canada rolling again as Brett Connolly put them up 3-0 just over two minutes later. Moose Jaw Warrior forward Quinton Howden picked up his first point of this year's tournament on the goal.

Mark Scheifele scored a pair in the third to seal the win for Canada.

Wedgewood made 26 saves in shutout and is fifteenth Canadian goalie to post a shutout in his first World Junior start.

Canada gets back on the ice on Thursday night against Denmark. You can catch that game live on Country 100 and at DiscoverMooseJaw.com starting with the pre-game show at 6:30pm.
