The Moose Jaw Canucks mounted a comeback for the ages on Saturday afterrnoon at Ross Wells Park.

Moose Jaw entered the bottom of the seventh inning down 16-8 after kicking the ball around over the course of the game. They proceeded to score nine runs in the frame and walk away with a 17-16 win over the Regina Blue Jays in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s Midget AA Division.

“This win feels pretty good, we’ve gone into the seventh inning of some ball games and we’ve been down like that and with our team speed and ability to hit the baseball, we’re never out of a game,” said Head Coach John Eberl.

“Even though we gave up runs on errors in the top of the seventh, they pulled their socks up and they went out there and swung the bat, so I’m really proud of them for doing that.”

Moose Jaw hit everything that came near them in the seventh inning to put together the big comeback. Bryden Pow finished off the win with a walk-off single with the bases loaded to win the game.

“It felt good, I’ve been struggling at the plate lately, so it felt good to get that out of the way,” said Pow.

The young Canuck struggled on the mound during the game, but made up for it with the game-winning hit in the seventh.

“I just had to stay focused, put it behind me and then at the plate, just thought base hit and it came,” said Pow.

The Canucks finished with 17 hits in the win. Garrick Ward led the way, going 3-for-5 with a triple, four RBI, two stole bases and a run scored.

Pow, Ryan Botterill, Raine Eberl, Ryan Zerff, Kyle MacDonald and Tyson Jordison all finished with two hits each in the win. Tyler Lorenz, along with Botterill, Pow and Jordison picked up two RBI each.

Botterill and MacDonald scored three runs each.

Regina opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, but Moose Jaw took the lead with three in the bottom of the third.  The Blue Jays would take full control after that scoring in each of the next four innings, starting with four in the fourth to go in front 6-4.

The Jays added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. The Canucks answered back with four in the sixth, but Regina looked like they secured the win with six runs in the top of the seventh until Moose Jaw put together the massive comeback.

Moose Jaw didn’t really help their pitchers out much during the game as they committed nine errors in the field. Only six of the Blue Jays’ 16 runs were earned.

Ward started for the Canucks, allowing five runs – two earned – on four hits over 3 1/3 innings of work. He had seven strikeouts and three walks.

Pow gave up three runs – two earned – on two hits and three walks in a 1 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out four.

Jordison finished the game on the mound, throwing 2 1/3 innings and allowing eight runs – only two earned – on four hits and three walks. He struck out one.

“Walks and errors have hurt us all year when we lose ball games and that’s the story again for us today,” said Eberl. “It’s stuff that we can clean up and we’ll work on as we lead into that league finals and provincial weekends, for sure.”

The Canucks are now 14-2-1 on the year. They return to the field on Tuesday when they host the Regina White Sox at Ross Wells. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
