The 13U AA Canucks lost their Baseball Regina League final 12-4 to the Lumsden Cubs Monday afternoon at Andrie Diamond.

They can hold their heads high for a season well-played, but it just wasn’t their day at the plate in the final game. Stymied for four innings the Lumsden pitching, the Canucks couldn't catch up and a late comeback attempt fell short.

“It was a great season and the kids played hard all year,” said Canucks assistant coach Taylor Elder. “Hopefully they had fun and they learned something along the way.”

The Canucks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first but the Cubs scored their first of their runs in the top of the second. The Cubs played flawless defensively as well, only needing a few runs per inning to open up a 12-3 lead on the Canucks by the seventh. The Canucks were able to get a few runners on, but they ran out of outs in the seventh.

Brogan Bowes struck out six batters in four innings of work, while Zayden Anderson threw the other three innings for Moose Jaw.

“We had a great group of kids,” Elder said. “They came out and battled hard every day. They bonded as players and learned a lot along the way. Obviously they’re going to be disappointed in the moment, but all in all we had a really great season.”

The Canucks finished first in the regular season and steamrolled the Regina Pacers 23-13 in the semifinal Sunday. In that game, Anderson drove home five on a four-hit performance at the plate and Bowes had four RBI. Kaison Skeoch struck out six in three innings on the mound.

It was a good season for a team, who like many a few months ago, weren’t sure if there would even be a season.

“The friendships they made, and the skills they learned throughout the summer, that’s something they’ll take with them for the rest of their lives,” Elder said.
