An all-Moose Jaw U11 AA final in the baseball Regina league between the Prairie Dogs and the Canucks went the Canucks way with a 10-1 final Sunday.

But the real winner might be the future of baseball in Moose Jaw.

Canucks head coach Shane Sowden talked after the game.

“All around, nobody should feel disappointed about today,” he said. “It’s easy for me to say as the winning coach, but it was a great season and it was a great day for baseball in Moose Jaw.”

Sowden said he’s never had a group this young be as mentally tough as they were.

“We got a tiny bit rattled when we went down 1-0,” he said. “But we regrouped. I had a great group of parents and if you get a group of kids at this age group that can have short memories and not freak out, it makes our jobs easier.”

Sowden was thankful to get the season in, given that it wasn’t a certainty even four months ago if baseball was going to happen.

“As a coach, you want to provide an experience where you hope all 11 kids play next year, and I think the team possibly did that,” he said. “It was a positive experience for all the kids and the Prairie Dogs had a great season too.”

Prairie Dogs head coach Craig Flanagan said his team had nothing to hang their heads about Sunday’s effort.

“When the boys left the field, they were pretty proud of themselves,” he said. “It wasn’t the results we wanted, but I was proud of them and they feel good about themselves.”

Flanagan said the baseball future for these kids in the city is looking good.

“You get the top athletes in any city coming out and wanting to play ball and be a part of baseball, you’re going to see some good things,” Flanagan said. “I feel like the kids are learning to play ball the right way at a young age.”

Both teams will have some good prospects to send up to the U13 level, while also having a strong U11 program next year as well.
