Riley Morhart knew his team needed a big performance heading into their final round robin game on Saturday afternoon.

The third-year pitcher gave them just that, throwing a two-hit complete game in the Moose Jaw Canucks’ 5-3 win over the Humboldt Dodgers to wrap up the round robin at the Baseball Sask Midget AA Provincial Championship.

The win clinched second place in the pool for Moose Jaw and sent them into the semifinals on Sunday after they cruised to a 20-2 win over the Regina White Sox to start the day on Saturday.

“Everyone laid it out on the diamond today,” said Morhart.  “It was a great way to end pitching, I won’t be pitching tomorrow now, but hopefully we can get a win to extend the season.”

Morhart gave up three runs on two hits and walked two.  He didn’t allow a hit after the second inning and only allowed two baserunners over the final five innings.

“They’re a really quality hitting team, they always try to put the bat on the ball,” said Morhart.  “I just go after them, trust my defence, so it was good to be able to have the confidence to right after them and let them hit the ball.”

Humboldt took an early 3-1 lead after two innings, but Moose Jaw continued to grind out at-bats and eventually got the tying runs in the fifth thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles from Dawson Kurz and Kaleb Wilson.

The Canucks carried that momentum over into the final two innings.

Raine Eberl drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth on a single and then Wyatt Riendeau provided some insurance with an RBI-single of his own in the seventh.

Morhart shut the door from there.

“(Friday) everybody’s heads weren’t really in it, but we came to the ball diamond today ready to play,” said Morhart.

“Everyone is on their high horse right now, so hopefully we can transfer that into tomorrow.”

After struggling at the plate during Friday’s 5-1 loss to Weyburn, the Canucks have shown the offence that made them successful throughout the regular season.

“We need to keep the same approach at the plate, that’s a big key of why we won these two games today,” said Morhart.  “Everybody’s aggressive, nobody’s taking pitches, everybody’s just going after the ball and taking good quality hacks.”

The Canucks will now take on the North East Red Sox in the semifinal at 12:00pm at Blackwell Diamond.  The other semifinal will have the Weyburn Beavers against the winner of Sunday morning’s tiebreaker between the North West Pirates and Regina Pacers.

The final is set for 3:00pm at Ross Wells Park.
