The Caronport Cougars kept their perfect record in tact on Tuesday night, but they had to work for it.

The Vanier Spirits battled the Cougars hard, but still ended up falling in three straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-17) during their meeting in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Girls Volleyball League.

“We fought back, our passing got us in trouble a few times, but we've had the motto all year long that we just want to keep being aggressive and coming at teams with positive pressure, that paid off for us tonight,” said Caronport head coach Derek Zacharias.

Coming off a win in the Moose Jaw Senior Girls Volleyball Tournament on the weekend, the Cougars were looking for a better effort, but Zacharias said they have some areas that need to be cleaned up.

“We've been working on our defence, but we haven't had a practice since the tournament on the weekend, so we just focused on being able to transition any attacks that they brought at us and get them back over the net,” he said.

Vanier battled hard throughout the game and led in the final two sets before Caronport was able to put together long service runs that allowed them to re-take the lead and eventually finish off the victory.

The Spirits are coming away encouraged with their play though.

“It's still a learning process, we still have a lot of time left in the season, I'm definitely happy with how the girls played today, but we just need to learn how to finish and not let those leads slip away,” said Vanier head coach Rikki Bell.

“There was some passes that we missed and some key opportunities to take advantage of our hitting and our offence. We just need to work on our passing.”

The Cougars have been dominating the competition throughout the league this season and Zacharias credited his team with staying focused.

“We try to keep a real strong mindset of improving every day, we try not to focus on the results and just on are we getting better every time we step on the court,” said Zacharias.

“Seeing different teams all the time helps, have to adapt to different kinds of offences and defences that we see and there's great teams across the province that we've had chances to play against.”

In other senior girls volleyball action on Tuesday, the Central Cyclones rolled to a straight set win over the Rouleau Rebels (25-20, 25-14, 25-21).

Central won in straight sets over first place Peacock (25-15, 25-19, 25-16) in senior boys volleyball. Other senior boys action saw Vanier knock off Cornerstone in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 15-10), while Caronport topped Rouleau in five sets (25-16, 9-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-9).
