“It was nice to come to Soccerfest and have a couple days off then come and win this game,” said Erin Winterton, who had two goals in the win for Central. “We played as a team and did really well.”

Central built up a 2-0 first half lead with goals from Dah Mu and Winterton and then they continued to pressure in the second half and added three more goals with Melissa Dorais, Gillian Francis and Winterton all finding the back of the net.

“We moved the ball really well and we used our support more than we usually do, which was awesome,” said Winterton. “We were just trying to work on our positioning this game.

“We tend to all crowd around the ball, so we wanted to spread out and move around and work on the basic skills in this game to get ready for Saturday.”

Caronport lost for the second time this week, but kept the score closer this time around against a talented Central squad. Head coach Rod Appleby continues to be encouraged with progress his team is making, despite the lack of wins.

“We had two good chances and the defence kept them down to five goals instead of eight, that's progress,” he said.

The Cougars have been using small bench marks to measure the progress that they've been able to make this season with a young and inexperienced team. That progress has been noticeable on the field.

“It's not how we start the season, it's how we finish in the end,” Appleby added. “If we can be the team that improves the most, that doesn't necessarily mean that we will win, but if we're the team that improves the most, in that aspect we've been successful and we have been improving, significantly.”

The win is another nice building block for the Cyclones and they'll need as they head into a big test on Saturday with the first place Swift Current Ardens coming to town, along with the Estevan Elecs for a pair of doubleheaders with Central and Vanier.

“It's going to be a challenge, but I think we're ready,” said Winterton. “We want to try and play our best game against them, so we've got to work hard.”

Central tied Swift Current 2-2 in their opening game of the year.

They hit the field at 10:30am on Saturday, while Vanier will face Estevan. They switch opponents for the second game of the day at 2:45pm. Both go at Smith Field.
