Central's Rae Whitehead goes up for a block against Assiniboia during Thursday's High School Senior Girls Volleyball action.

After a loss at a tournament to Assiniboia earlier in the season, the Central Cyclones were looking for some pay back when they got the Rockets in their home gym on Thursday night.

The Cyclones got it as they rolled to a straight set win (25-19, 25-22 and 25-18) over Assiniboia in high school senior girls volleyball action.

Central wanted to get off to a quick start against the Rockets and they were able to do just that. It carried over then for the rest of the match.

“We addressed that we needed to come out and make sure that we were serving well and passing well off the start, and get into a bit of a rhythm,” said Central coach Joe Gunnis. “Then we could engage our weapons, our hitters.”

Assiniboia topped Central at a tournament in Regina earlier in the season and that gave the Cyclones some extra motivation going into the game. Gunnis noticed that the team came out strong right from the start.

“When you lose to somebody, you always want to come back the next time you play them and improve and show well,” he said. “Certainly the girls were ready to play tonight and it was evident in warm-up and they came out and did what we needed to do.”

The Rockets couldn't answer the energy that Central brought the game and it ended up costing them.

“My stronger players didn't play as well as they should have, so that was sort of the key,” said Rockets head coach Sherry Saxton-Richards. “A home gym was certainly a deterrent on our part.”

While Central was able to pick up the quick win over Assiniboia, Gunnis still saw areas for them to work on heading into next week's action.

“We had flashes of brilliance and some times where we maybe let the foot off the gas peddle a little bit,” he said. “We did get better than we were in previous matches, so that's what counts, is to continue to improve each time we're on the court.”

The Cyclones will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Rouleau, while Assiniboia welcomes in the Vanier Spirits on Tuesday.

Other girls action on Thursday night saw Caronport top Vanier in four sets (25-13, 18-25, 25-13 and 25-23). On the boys side, Cornerstone knocked off Vanier in a five-set battle (11-25, 25-23, 17-25, 26-24 and 15-7).
