Central quarterback Parker Chow just gets a throw off with Estevan defensive back Mitchel Clark in his face.

A classic game between the Central Cyclones and Estevan Elecs ended in controversy on Saturday afternoon at Gutheridge Field.

The Moose Jaw High School Football game headed into overtime tied 21-21. The Elecs scored on the opening possession of the extra frame to make it 27-21, which forced Central to score to avoid dropping the game on their home field.

The Cyclones answered and drove the ball to the four-yard line. A sack on second down set up one final play to decide the game with Central sitting at third-and-nine from the ten-yard line.

Central quarterback Parker Chow rolled out and found slotback Jonah Branning in the end zone, the pass was on target, but as Branning was coming down to the ground, the ball was knocked loose with Estevan thinking they had won the game.

However, the pass was ruled a touchdown – Branning's fourth of the game – and Central completed the two-point conversion to Branning on the next play for the 29-27 win.

“It's tough for our players to see that right now, it's frustrating, but we can definitely come away knowing that was our game and we got robbed,” said Mark Schott, head coach of the Elecs, moments after the game.

“Both teams played a phenomenal football game, it was entertaining from start to finish, we feel that the play at the end of the game went a different way than the refs saw it, but that's not our call, so it's frustrating. We've just got to take it that we played a hell of a game and move on.”

While celebrating their second win of the season, the Cyclones knew that they escaped with the two points in a tightly played contest.

“Estevan played a great game, they came out ready to go, they were fired up, but we ended up battling near the end,” said Central head coach Colin Belsher. “In overtime, we got a lucky break in the end zone and then Parker found Jonah for that extra two points to give us the victory.”

Entering the game with a 0-3 record, the Elecs gave the 1-2 Cyclones everything they had throughout the five quarters. Central held a slim 7-0 lead at halftime and Estevan scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to tie the game.

On the Elecs' opening possession of overtime, they were down to third-and-goal from the five-yard line, but quarterback Andrew Kehler gave them life with his fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon, finding Christian Pfeifer in the end zone. The two-point conversion failed and ended up being the difference.

“Our guys were just amazing today and they played well and I'm extremely proud of them,” said Schott.

Central had an answer for the Elecs throughout the afternoon. They answered each of Estevan's first two touchdowns with a one-play drive on the ensuing possession.

Estevan tied the game at 7-7 late in the third quarter on a six-yard touchdown pass from Kehler to Dallas Dowhanuik, but on Central's first play from scrimmage after, Branning broke free for a 67-yard catch and run to restore the seven-point lead for the Cyclones.

The Elecs drove for another score to start the fourth quarter with Dowhanuik hauling in a 22-yard strike from Kehler to tie the game at 14-14, but again Central answered.

Running back Zach Hagerman took the kick-off back 73 yards to the two-yard line and Chow found Branning on the next play for a two-yard score.

The tying score came with just under four minutes to go as Kehler found Mitchel Clark in the back of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown.

“The kids were able to come back and fight back when they were down,” said Belsher. “They found a way to dig deep and get this victory out and in the end, they were able to get it.”

The game was turnover filled with Chow throwing two interceptions and Central losing two fumbles to go along with a number of turnover on downs. Kehler threw three interceptions and Clark threw another for the Elecs.

Chow ended up 231 yards passing on 10-of-20 attempts, while Branning caught five passes for 105 yards and four touchdowns.

Despite the interceptions, Kehler had an exceptional game for Estevan as he went 20-of-33 for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Dowhanuik finished with 107 yards on six catches, while Clark hauled in a game-high seven passes for 90 yards.

Central is on the bye next week, while Estevan will play host to 2-1 Swift Current next Saturday.

Other action on Saturday saw Peacock stay unbeaten with a 45-26 win over Vanier and Yorkton kept pass as they also moved to 3-0 with a 55-17 win over Weyburn.
