The last two Moose Jaw teams alive in the high school girls soccer league playoffs were eliminated on Thursday in semifinal action at Sunningdale Field.

The Vanier Spirits lost 6-1 to the Weyburn Eagles, while the Central Cyclones kept it close against the eight-time defending champion Swift Current Ardens before falling 4-0.

“They worked really hard today, we had a lots of chances to score and we just couldn’t quite finish on those chances, but I’m pretty happy with the way the girls have worked out this season,” said Vanier coach Daniel Atkins after the loss.

Hailey Neiszner and Kylie Van De Woestyne scored two goals each in the win for Weyburn, while Arliss Sidloski and Sydney Spencer also found the back of the net.

Olivia Moyse had Vanier’s lone goal in the loss.

“I’m pretty happy with how the girls played, definitely a good game here today, a little cold, but good anyways,” said Weyburn coach Nichol Thomson.

“We’ve been focusing on lots of movement of the ball, lots of passes to feet and that came through today.”

Vanier put lots of pressure on Weyburn throughout the second half, but could only break through for the one goal with the Eagles’ keeper making some big stops to keep her team in front.

“We had some real early chances that if we were able to capitalize on would have made it a different kind of game and that’s what we were hoping to do and just failed to do so, so sometimes that happens, but we’re looking to the next game,” said Atkins.

Swift Current led just 1-0 into the second half, but were able to seal the win with three late goals.

Taylor Kohls had two goals in the win for the Ardens, while MJ Anderson and Rebecca Treen added single markers.

Swift Current will now battle Weyburn for the league title coming up on Tuesday at Sunningdale Field.

For the Moose Jaw teams, they will turn their focus to the 2A regionals coming up next weekend as Central, Peacock and Vanier play host to North Battleford John Paul II, Se Se Wa Hum, Meadow Lake and Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney.

Moose Jaw will also be hosting the 2A girls provincial championship.

Coming up on Friday in the Moose Jaw High School Boys Soccer League, the Central Cyclones host the Peacock Tornadoes in the semifinals.  They square off at 4:30 p.m. at the Canada Games Field.
