The Moose Jaw High School Girls Soccer League opened its season on Saturday with four games in total, including two here in Moose Jaw.

The Central Cyclones shutout the Peacock Tornadoes, 7-0, in the morning game at Sunningdale Field.

“It feels good, especially considering most of our team is new and we’ve got a young team this year, so it feels real good,” said Central’s Sydney Booth after the win.

Central would come away with a split of their two games on the opening day, falling to the Vanier Spirits, 5-0, in the afternoon action.

It was a close game between Central and Peacock throughout the first half with the Cyclones taking a 2-0 lead into the break. Central exploded in the second half for five goals and rolled to the win.

Despite being a young team, Central’s Ariet Okuori said they were able to play with confidence throughout the game.

“Our coaches have been working with us so diligently that we were sure of ourselves throughout the game,” said Okuori, who scored for Central in the win.

Jayme Puersten had a hat trick in the win for the Cyclones, while Didumo Omot picked up a pair of goals and Tamra Reeve had the other marker.

Peacock is a young team as well this season, but Allison Billy felt they played a strong game, despite the lopsided final score.

“We went in with many of our players not knowing a lot about soccer, but that was a good game to learn from and Central let us, kind of, learn how to do it,” said Billy.

The Tornadoes came away on the losing end, but are looking to build off the experience gained in the loss.

“It was definitely a tough loss, but we’re only going to get better from here and we’re only going to keep learning,” said Peacock’s Katherine McDougall. “At the start of the game, nobody knows where to go, but by the end of the game, we were starting to learn where their area is and what their job is.”

Peacock will be back on the field on Tuesday to host the Spirits at Sunningdale Field at 4:30 p.m. The Cyclones will hit the road to Weyburn for a showdown with the Eagles on Tuesday as well.

The annual Soccerfest Tournament is coming up this weekend here in Moose Jaw with the three Moose Jaw teams hosting 13 teams from across Saskatchewan for two days of soccer on Friday and Saturday.

The Moose Jaw Boys Soccer League opens play on Wednesday with three games, including the Vanier Vikings hosting the Weyburn Eagles at 4:30 p.m. at the Canada Games Field. Central travels to Estevan and Peacock heads to Swift Current.
