After dropping a game to their rivals, the Regina Heat, last week, the Moose Jaw Chiefs were back to their winning ways on Thursday night.

The Chiefs started slow, but took control in the second quarter to knock off the Saskatoon Steelers, 10-6, at Mosaic Place in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League’s Senior Division.

The win puts Moose Jaw’s record at 6-2 on the year.

The Chiefs held a slim 3-2 advantage after one period, but they scored early and often in the second quarter to build up an 8-2 lead with 7:44 remaining in the frame. Saskatoon scored twice late to cut the lead to 8-4 after two.

Captain Carter Davis said they regrouped in the first intermission and got back to playing their game, which led to the second period success.

“When we’re moving on offence, we’re tough to beat. We came in after that the first period and said that we’re standing still and for us to be effective on offence, we’ve got to get our feet moving and get the ball to the middle,” he said. “When we buy into that system, we’re pretty tough to stop on offence.”

Each team scored twice in the third period as Moose Jaw put together their sixth win of the season.

Frank Davalos paced the Chiefs’ offence with four goals, while Davis finished with two goals and five points. Todd Doepker picked up a goal and three points in the win for Moose Jaw.

Tanner Kittler chipped in with a pair of goals and Eric Chevrier had a goal and two points as well.

The win moved the Chiefs into a tie with the Heat for second place in the senior division standings, but the Heat have a game in hand. Moose Jaw’s next game will see them hit the road into Regina for a rematch with the Heat, who beat them 8-6 last week at Mosaic Place.

Davis said they were able to get some good momentum with Thursday’s win heading into that game on June 7 and their road game against the first place Saskatoon Brewers on June 10.

“That last game against the Heat was a wake-up call, we never like losing to our rivals in Regina, so after that game it was pretty solemn in the dressing room and we had a talk saying that we know what it takes to get back on the winning side of things and this game helps to get us going that way,” said Davis.

Bantam White Mustangs Fall in Regina

The Moose Jaw Bantam White Mustangs lost for the first time during the 2017 season on Thursday when they dropped a 4-3 game to the Regina Rush in the Queen City Box Lacrosse League.

Liam Varco, Kael Nichols and Jacob Gyman scored in the loss for Moose Jaw, who sit at 5-1 on the year.

Their next game is coming up on Tuesday when they battle the Red Mustangs in an all-Moose Jaw showdown at Mosaic Place.
