Improvement game-to-game was the biggest takeaway for the Moose Jaw Chiefs as they hit the court for two games to open the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League season this weekend.

The Chiefs opened the season with a 15-8 loss to the Heat in Regina on Saturday night, but they rebounded with a 16-4 win over the Estevan Impact on Sunday afternoon at the Kinsmen Arena to sit at 1-1 early in the senior division season.

"The first game was tough against Regina, they beat us on the ball fairly often and it showed on the score sheet, but (against Estevan) we were starting to get the flow of it again," said Chiefs forward Kyle Dalgarno.

Dalgarno led the offence in both games on the weekend. He had a hat trick and four points in Saturday's loss and finished with a hat trick and five points on Sunday.

Todd Doepker picked up two goals and four points on Saturday, while Tanner Kittler, Carter Davis and Thomas Spence also scored in the loss.

The Chiefs trailed 8-2 after the first period against the Heat and weren't able to recover.

On Sunday, they flipped the script and jumped out to a 9-1 lead on the Impact after the first period to roll to their first win of the season.

In addition to Dalgarno's strong game, Doepker finished with four goals and six points in the victory, while Spence posted a hat trick and six points. Kittler, Brock Paul, Cody McCartney, Matt Lys, Jeff Kitts and Adam Baker also found the back of the net in the win.

"We had a lot of good communication, good cycles, ball movement was awesome, we were having fun on the bench and it carried onto the floor, so it was good," said Dalgarno after Sunday's win.

Moose Jaw is a younger team this season and for many of the players, this weekend was their first action in the senior division. The Chiefs feel like they will be a team that improves as the season moves on.

"We've picked up about 4-5 new guys, we've got a whole new group on defence, but they're working the systems and getting a feel for it," said Dalgarno.

"We were a lot more calmer (on Sunday), Regina is a good team, Estevan is a good club, but we just found it a bit easier than (Saturday). We got the nerves out in the first game and we got our stuff together today."

With their first two games in the books, Dalgarno feels like the team will only improve from moving forward as the players get more comfortable together.

"This is only the beginning, early season jitters, so we're only going to get better from here on out," he said.

The Chiefs are back on the court next Saturday, May 5, when they host the Saskatoon Steelers at the Kinsmen Arena.
