The Moose Jaw Kinsmen Speed Skating Club is hosting a speed skating meet this weekend.

Saturday, Caronport's Barkman Arena will be home to a full day of short track speed skating.

The meet will run during the day time hours Saturday and will feature very young skaters to masters in races based on ability, spectators are welcome.

Coach John Morris said ‘speed skating is a fun sport and great to watch with its athleticism, tactics and sportsmanship so come and watch. It’s a sport that a good athlete, hockey player or figure skater can take up and be very successful at. We welcome people to come to a practice. We’ll get them some skates and they can try it. Who knows, some one right here could be the next Cindy Klassen who takes it up in their late teens and goes on to the national team.’

Warmups will start at about 7:30 in the morning at the Barkman Arena and the races will continue past 4 p.m, Verna Kergan said.

“Looks like we have close to 70 skaters coming,” Kergan said. “I would say we have about 20 skaters from Moose Jaw that will be there. It’s exciting to have the meet (near) Moose Jaw and the kids from our club don’t have to travel, and they can come out and for some of them it’ll be for the first time and learn what skating is and what competing is. We’re hoping that they catch the bug and they want to go out of town for more competitions.

Some of their members have skated in competitions before, but their Active Start group of their youngest skaters will skate around noon for a couple of races.

“It’s fun for those little guys to come out and skate, and for our older skaters to cheer them on,” she said. “It’s pretty important to bring in these little guys. They’re from our learn to skate program and we’re always excited to have them come out and entertain us.”
