A wall covered in banners showed just how successful of a season it was for the Cobra Cheerleading Club.

The Cobras hosted their year-end showcase on Saturday at Vanier Collegiate, putting on a final show for family and friends after a stellar year performing around the prairies.

"We went to a lot of competitions and most of our teams hit all their routines, so we brought home banners and prizes from every competition, all of our teams did really well,” said Cobra coach Payton Carleton.

The local club features girls as young as four years old and they progress throughout the year from the basics of cheerleading to performing some more complex stunts.

Six-year-old Annabelle Boyle said she likes everything about cheerleading, "I like that we get to do cool things like stunts and every time when we do go, our coaches put us up in this big stunt," she said.

The progress that the athletes show from the start of the year through to the showcase is impressive. Carleton said they start out pretty raw at the start of the year, but work hard to get to the point they are by the end of the season.

"With my little kids, a lot of them couldn't even do a summersault and now they're doing cartwheels, all of our teams have progressed," she said.

"When they’re little, we just do basic stunts, basic tumbling such as summersaults and cartwheels and stuff, but when they get older, we teach them more elite skills such as back walk overs, back tucks, things like that. We do jumps, stunts, dance and pyramid."

Getting to learn all the new stunts throughout the year is the biggest challenge, but also what keeps the athletes coming back.

"I love getting to do all this fun stuff with my friends and it’s really fun," said 10-year-old Sierra Glova, who's in her second year of cheerleading.

Addison Morhart got into the sport this year and said she had a great time with the club, "It was really fun to win some banners and learn throughout the year," she said.
